Sampling
At School of Synthesis we cover SAMPLING in a small class of between 1-8 students to ensure you develop a thorough understanding of this powerful music production technique.

Course Overview:
The art of sampling enables you to create sound design and soundscapes by manipulating audio using infinite possibilities. This course introduces you to sampling and uses the most advanced digital tools such as Kontakt and Ableton Live's Simpler.

Course Level:
This course covers basic and advanced techniques that can be applied to any form of hardware or software based sampling. While you’ll learn techniques that apply to any sampler, we recommend that you own or download trial versions of Kontakt. Please contact the school if you have any specific needs or requirements.

Course content and features:
An introduction to sampling
Modules of a sampler
Manipulating audio
Pitching, slicing, looping and stretching sounds in a sampler
Advanced sampling techniques
Creating sound design for film and video games
Creating layered, multi-sampled instruments

Course objectives: by the end of this course you should be able to:
Understand sampling
Utilise envelopes, modulation, filters and effects
Navigate any analogue or digital sampler
Create original sound design using advanced techniques
Create your own sampler instruments and libraries for use in any DAW
Develop an understanding of techniques used in professional sound design.

Learning methods:
Each session commences with a group demonstration and discussion, followed by solo work on one of our eight Mac workstations and our analogue synths where you will practice set themes and techniques derived from real-world applications of the technology. Upon demonstrating your command of the necessary skills you will be further encouraged to add originality to your recreations and save various versions of your work.

Additional resources and materials:
All hardware and software is supplied, though we recommend students bring a storage device (eg. portable usb or firewire drive) to save and back up all work, and a pen and paper to take notes.

Assessment and feedback:
You will save successive work and will receive regular support, encouragement and feedback from your tutor. All students will be sent a School of Synthesis tote bag containing a t-shirt, sticker and certificate upon the successful completion of the course. At the conclusion of the course you will be invited to leave feedback and evaluate your experience, at which point we'll email you a link to a suite of exclusive sounds and various discount offers from the School and its partners to say 'thanks'!
