I did the SOS DJ course over a weekend. I learnt so much that weekend! The tutor knew his stuff and makes it his personal mission to make sure that you get out of this course what you are looking for. Yes you will learn beat matching skills and the secret formula for seamless transitions between songs. But he is also really happy to give you all the other pearls of wisdom which come with many years in the industry. Thank you SOS. Xx

I enjoyed the DJ course with the School of Synthesis. I learned 80% more and faster than through studying through online research. The tutor was an easy-going and forgiving teacher. The DJ course is an affordable price, reasonable length of time, and reasonable class durations. Skills taught are beat-matching, transitions skills, DJ setups, software and where to get the music. The equipment used throughout the course is of high quality, so the best equipment is provided. Thank you to the School of synthesis for being kind and generous with knowledge, practical skills, advice, and more. I personally recommend doing the DJ course if you are seeking to become a DJ.

SOS DJ was excellent. The class was extremely interactive which I loved. After completing the course I feel confident enough to start practicing at home with the software that we were taught, and with the equipment we were shown. I liked how hands on the course was as we were able to get a feel of how the equipment works and how to use it when playing our own music. I would highly recommend this course for anyone who has an interest in djing and wants to learn how to on quality equipment.

As an aspiring electronic music producer I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn some DJ skills. SOS DJ course was a great opportunity to learn from a professional DJ. We covered all the basics and got plenty of good tips and tricks to compete in this already competitive DJ industry. I specifically loved learning about the different types of hardware from XDJ-R1’s to CDJs and Turntables.

In my search for a place to learn some DJ skills – I came across the School of Synthesis. Walking into the DJ course as a complete novice I was a bit nervous. We started with the basics and quickly progressed to mixing beats and having a lot of fun. The benefit of being a small group was that we got to ask a lot of questions and be very hands on. We covered set-up, playlists, industry exposure and various genres within EDM. I highly recommend School of Synthesis. It has left me with oodles of enthusiasm to learn more about music and become a DJ.

The School of Synthesis DJ course was exactly what I needed to finally start DJing. You have a knowledgeable tutor on hand to answer any questions and you learn using the same equipment you can expect to use out in the club. Leroy was patient and gave us lots of handy tips. I went out and bought decks after the first week of the course, I felt so excited and inspired.

SOS DJ

At SOS our DJ lessons run in a maximum class size of 5 people to ensure you learn the most important aspects of the craft in a hands-on-hardware environment.

Modern DJing requires an understanding of song structure, EQ and beat matching, plus familiarity with various types of hardware and software to ensure you have full control of your music in your set. Here we’ll cover each of these topics, plus a look at how to go about getting gigs.

Delivered by resident Melbourne DJ Leroy Amphlett and renowned Australia DJ / Producer Lance Harrison in an intimate setting of only 1-5 students, our SOS DJ course sets out to simplify the process of DJing and ensure you’re capable behind the decks no matter what the set-up. In doing so we use a combination of 2 Technics SL1200s, 2 Pioneer CDJ 2000s, 2 Pioneer XDJ 1000s, a Pioneer DJM900 mIxer, a Pioneer DJM750 mixer, 2 Traktor controllers and an Allen and Heath DJ mixer. We also use a combination of software including Pioneer Rekordbox and NI Traktor software, to best represent the set up most used by club DJs.

Course Level

The course is suitable for beginners and/or those wanting to learn the fundamentals of DJing. This course is the perfect place to start if you’re new to DJing, but depending on the experience of our students we can also cover more advanced techniques of hardware and software.  Please contact the school if you have any specific needs or requirements.

  • Understanding the basic functions of DJ software (including Rekordbox and Traktor)

  • Beat-match between songs, and identify some mixing techniques for when beat matching is not possible
  • Use EQ and faders on a DJ mixer to blend between songs in a mix
