Sound Design
Testimonials
Mark Riley
I couldn’t speak more highly of SOS’s Sound Design course. Through their wealth of knowledge the tutors help you to understanding the basics of synthesis and sound design which helps you create and sculpt a sound completely unique and original. I have now completed 5 of the classes at School of Synthesis and am close to finishing up a brand new EP which I am extremely happy about. Without the help of the guys at SOS this wouldn’t have been possible. Get enrolled now!

I attended the School of Synthesis Sound Design course to learn sampling and synthesis. The lessons, were both thorough and informative, and I took away a great deal of useful knowledge to incorporate into my music. I suggest to anyone, whether novice or seasoned pro, that it’s well worth taking some courses that you’re interested in. My processes have never been better as a direct result of what I learned.

I’ve been working as a DJ for 4 years and been wanting to get into the production side of electronic music as well for some time, and when I found out about School of Synthesis I felt like this was my chance! I’ve taken 3 courses now and the Sound Design course was great to learn the basics of sound design. The tutors managed to teach everyone something new in our class with very different levels of music knowledge. I’ve learnt so much from these courses that I will be taking with me which I’m truly thankful for.

I’ve been djing for 10 years now and never really got round to learning the production side. School of Synthesis had so many courses on offer but I chose the 3 that I thought would really benefit me. Production Masterclass, Sound Design and Modern Music Theory! All come highly recommended and have given me a great insight into making my own music and the drive I needed to sit at home and do it! All three were taught by expert tutors.
Andre Klein
I had a basic understanding of synthesis before enrolling in the sound design course at SOS, although I wanted to be able to do more than just rely on using other people’s presets. Since then, I have been creating my own presets including 909 style kicks, techno pads, laser sounds, and some really cool sequences. Once we had a solid foundation of synthesis, the tutor went on to show us the power of sampling and watching him work was really inspiring, and has changed the way I produce. I can’t recommend this course enough !

I attended the Sound Design course with the intention of progressing my knowledge of synthesis beyond twiddling knobs at random until something sounded good. I was tired of being restricted by the impersonal nature of presets and really desired to develop the skills to create my own sounds. Not only did I achieve this but I had an absolute ball as well. The casual teaching style, deep technical knowledge and obvious passion for electronic music makes an engaging learning environment. I can finally get those sounds from my head out down and into tracks!

Before enrolling in the School of Synthesis, I was only scratching the surface of music production. The Sound Design instructor was an expert in his field and fantastic at breaking down complex topics. Having an understanding of the underlying principles of sound design means I can make intentional decisions to create the sound I have in my head. I wholeheartedly recommend the Sound Design course to anyone with a remote curiosity in how sound is created and sculpted.
Sound Design
At School of Synthesis we cover SOUND DESIGN in a small class of between 1-9 students to ensure you develop a thorough understanding of this powerful music production method.
Course Overview
Learning how to create that sound inside your head is about understanding basic synthesis and sound manipulation possibilities. Sound Design is a growing field and one that is forever embracing new technologies and techniques. Our tutors create sound design for film, video games and their own music on a daily basis and employ modern techniques to distinguish themselves in the industry. Former School of Synthesis Sound Design students have gone on to become full time working sound designers and have created sound for several major projects. This course is tutored by Tristan Malloch who is Australia’s brand specialist for major synth companies such as Korg, Native Instruments and Arturia. The course has been co-designed by Davide Carbone who has been making sounds for synths, video games, music and film for over two decades and is renowned for his innovative sound design skills. This course introduces you to sound design, synthesis and sampling and uses the most advanced analogue and digital tools such as Korg Minilogue, Korg MS20, Moog Sub Phatty, Roland SH, Arturia Mini Brute, Rob Papen, Massive, FM8 and Davide’s own MusicTech awarded virtual analogue synth, Carbon Electra, as well as samplers such as Kontakt by Native Instruments and others found in Ableton Live and Logic.
All sound design students receive a free full release MAC & PC copy of Carbon Electra and each student has their own Korg Minilogue to work on for the duration of the course. This course will dispel the complexities of creating your own sounds and introduce you to unique and advanced techniques that can be used across any analogue or digital synth or sampler.
